Activists to force protection of outmigrating Kennebec River shad & salmon from turbine-kill at 4 hydropower dams
July 17, 2010 interview of Ed Friedman of Bowdoingham. 26 minutes.
On July 13th, Friedman, Douglas Watts of Augusta and Friends of Merrymeeting Bay filed a Notice Of Intent to sue the owners of four Kennebec River hydro-electric dams for refusing to install fish-excluder grills over their turbine intakes.
The plaintiffs say that the dams violate the federal clean water act, and state law, by killing endangered atlantic salmon and protected American shad, which get caught up in the 4 dams' turbines while migrating downriver to the Gulf of Maine. More info at the merrymeeting bay website
